Between stimulus and response there is a space
Next class: Meditations on the Six Human Needs at Edgewood Library, Pittsburgh from 1 – 2:30 PM.
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
~ Viktor Frankl
My Dear Friends,
How we feel about life depends a lot on our internal questions. If something unpleasant happens in your life are you likely to ask, “How could I be so stupid?”
Or, “Why do things like this always happen to me?”
I’d like to suggest that you use my favorite acronym to Stop, Take a Deep Breath, Observe your thoughts, feelings, and body reactions, and Proceed with awareness.
Proceeding with awareness means that we seek to ask more productive questions. If you jump to a negative thought, try, “Is this really true?”
Take responsibility for a mistake you’ve made, but ask, “What can I learn from this?” Or, “How can I turn this around?”
Productive questions are the foundation of growth, which is one of the six essential human needs.
Try widening the still space between stimulus and response this week by using STOP, and choosing a response to your own thoughts that is kindly and curious.
Wishing you happy questions,
Cristina
Thank you to my daughter, Charlotte for arranging a small gathering at her home to discuss Finding Peace in Troubled Times. ❤
